The Minnesota Twins pulled off what is likely the high point of their season so far with a stunning walk-off 7-5 win over the New York Yankees at Target Field.
Down 5-3 entering the 9th and facing ace closer Aroldis Chapman, Josh Donaldson smashed a 2-run bomb to tie things up, before Nelson Cruz followed up with a 2-run shot of his own for the walk-off win.
The Twins had trailed 4-1 and 5-2 at points during the game, but the bullpen managed to prevent the Yankees from running up the score as they had the past two nights.
They were aided at the plate by Cruz, who finished the night with four RBI.
In the 9th, Chapman didn’t record a single out as Jorge Polanco singled before Donaldson homered. Willians Astudillo then singled before Cruz’s blast.
It took just nine pitches for Chapman to blow the game and the Twins to record a morale-boosting victory in a season with little to cheer.
Josh Donaldson tied it. Nelson Cruz ended it.
