The Twins moved their record to 4-0 on Friday with their 3-1 win over the Chicago White Sox.
Phil Hughes made his first start on the mound since last June after undergoing thoracic outlet surgery. Hughes is as a fly-ball pitcher, so naturally the outfielders are on their toes when he’s on the bump.
Thankfully, Byron Buxton and Max Kepler can cover a ton of ground and they did exactly that on Friday night.
If it wasn’t for these two catches by Buxton in the first inning, things could have really gotten out of hand.
Then in the bottom of the fifth, Kepler’s diving grab kept the game tied at one.
Hughes ended up throwing 6 innings, allowing just 1 run, scattering 5 hits while punching out 3.
All-in-all Buxton made six putouts for Hughes. His defense has made up for his play at the plate, as he’s just 1-18 with 11 strikeouts.
The Twins will go for their fifth straight win Saturday as Adalberto Mejia starts on the mound for Minnesota. First pitch is set for 1:10.
