Erin Henderson has been released by the Minnesota Vikings.
The team announced the move Friday afternoon. Henderson was arrested for drunk driving charges twice in less than two months last season, so the move doesn’t come as a big surprise.
He was arrested on probable cause DWI and possession of a controlled substance on Nov. 19. The second arrest occurred New Year’s Day after Henderson’s car reportedly skidded off the road and into trees, heavily damaging the front of his vehicle, as reported by USA Today. Police officers on the scene said he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol and was arrested after a field sobriety test.
Before being arrested the second time, Henderson issued an apology, saying he embarrassed the Vikings.
“I apologize to my teammates and the organization for this situation coming and arising,” he said eight days after the arrest, via the Star Tribune. “But now it’s here and it’s something we have to deal with. I’m sorry if I brought any embarrassment to this team or this organization. I didn’t want to be a distraction.”
According to Pro Football Talk, releasing Henderson gives the Vikings an extra $2.1 million in cap space.
In 14 games last season, the 27-year-old finished his sixth season with career highs in tackles (112), sacks (4) and interceptions (3).
