The Vikings officially announced Friday the signing of veteran quarterback Matt Cassel, The Associated Press reports.
Cassel, who played with the New England Patriots before being traded to the Chiefs in 2009, signed a one-year deal to the back-up quarterback to the Vikings’ Christian Ponder.
“The fact of the matter is, Christian’s the starting quarterback,” he told the Pioneer Press. “I’m there to help him, add value where I can, and go from there.”
Cassel, who has 62 career starts under his belt, was released by the Chiefs on Thursday with two years left on his contract.
The quarterback started in the place of injured Patriots quarterback Tom Brady in 2008, and led the team to an 11-5 record.
Last year in Kansas City, Cassel threw only six touchdowns and 12 interceptions.
