Now that we know Adrian Peterson isn’t being traded, the question turns to whether or not the 30-year-old running back will get a new contract.
Peterson’s agent, Ben Dogra, last week acknowledged that a trade won’t happen – but instead Dogra, who had been pushing for a trade, said the Vikings should extend “a commitment to make him retire as a Viking.”
Peterson is under contract with the Vikings through 2017. He is due to make over $45 million during the three remaining seasons on his deal with the Vikings, but none of the money is guaranteed.
That means that if the Vikings wanted to, they could release Peterson without a cap hit. One option the Vikings would have would be to guarantee some of the money in AP’s remaining contract.
So will the Vikings offer Peterson more in the way of guaranteed money to make amends with the running back? Vikings general manager Rick Spielman wouldn’t say when he was asked about it on Pro Football Talk Live.
“He is a player under contract. We never discuss with any of our players any financial consequences or anything financial with players’ contracts. We never discuss them publicly. That is kept internally, hopefully between the agent, the player, and ourselves, regardless of what the player is. All I can tell you at this point he is under contract with the Vikings. We intend to honor his contract in the ’15 season as we look forward to having him rejoin our team.”
