After a week of speculation that the San Francisco 49ers are genuinely interested in making a trade for Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, the head coach in Minnesota put at least a little bit of water on the burning rumors.
“As far as the quarterback position, Kirk’s our guy,” Zimmer said on Good Morning Football Friday. “He had a terrific year – we were fourth in the league on offense. We gotta get better on defense – we had a lot of injuries and young guys, but that’s my job to get that fixed.”
Cousins and the 49ers have long been linked because of Cousins’ relationship with San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan, who coached Cousins for two years when they were together in Washington, D.C.
According to sports reporter Evan Massey, the 49ers want to move on from Jimmy Garoppolo at quarterback and Massey says he’s told that Kirk Cousins “is a name to keep an eye on, adding that if the Vikings are open to dealing Cousins, “San Francisco will push hard to acquire him.”
Cousins is now 33 years old and due for a $31 million cap hit on the Vikings in 2021, with a $45 million paycheck waiting for him in 2022. According to The Athletic, if Cousins is traded his cap hit for a new team would be $21 million in 2021 and $35 million in 2022.
KSTP-TV’s Darren Wolfson is on record saying there are “credible” people in the NFL who believe Cousins will eventually wind up with the 49ers, though Wolfson still expects Cousins to be quarterbacking the Vikings in 2021.
"There are credible NFL people that I know who I texted with 24 hours ago that truly believe Kirk Cousins is going to end up with the San Francisco 49ers."
