Former Houston Texans and Denver Broncos head coach Gary Kubiak has signed on to become assistant head coach and an offensive advisor on head coach Mike Zimmer’s staff with the Minnesota Vikings.
Along with Kubiak comes his son, Klint Kubiak, who agreed to become Minnesota’s quarterbacks coach.
Gary Kubiak was the offensive coordinator on both Denver Super Bowl champion teams in the late 1990s, and he was head coach of the Broncos when they won Super Bowl 50 with Peyton Manning at quarterback in 2015.
Kubiak was head coach of the Texans for eight seasons (2006-13) and two seasons with Denver (2015-16) before stepping down because of health concerns, later described as “complex migraine condition,” according to ESPN.
Those teams went 82-75 in the regular season and 5-2 in the playoffs.
Presumably, because Kubiak is an offensive specialist, he’ll be able to help groom offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski and allow Zimmer to focus on the defense. Or as 1500 ESPN’s Judd Zulgad says, Kubiak might be the de facto head coach of the offense.
Klint Kubiak was on the Vikings coaching staff in 2013-14 as a quality control coach and offensive assistant, and since then he’s had three years of experience as an offensive assistant and QB coach with the Broncos (2016-18)
Brian Pariani also signed to coach tight ends. He’s worked with Kubiak for more than 20 years.
