There are nine days left in the MLB’s regular season, and half of them could be rendered completely meaningless at the rate the Twins are going.
Minnesota’s 4-3 win over the Royals Friday night knocked the magic number to win the AL Central down to five, meaning any combination of Twins wins and Indians losses that totals five will clinch the Twins’ first division title since 2010.
The Twins are also still on pace to reach 100 wins for just the second time in team history. The 1965 Twins finished 102-60 before losing the World Series to the Dodgers in seven games.
Meanwhile, Minnesota trails the Yankees by one in the race for the MLB home run record. Entering play Saturday, the Yankees have slugged 294 homers while the Twins have hit 293.
If the playoffs started today, the Twins would be going to New York for a best-of-five series against the Yankees. The other American League Divisional Series would feature the Astros against the winner of the Wild Card, which is currently set up to be the Athletics against the Rays or Indians, who are tied for the second wild-card spot.
