We updated this feature just a few weeks ago at the All-Star break. But due to Aaron Hicks’ sudden departure to Class AAA Rochester (presumably until September), we felt it necessary to update again.
When the season started, we decided to track the baseball exploits of Hicks against the two ex-Twins who were traded for pitching during the off-season: Denard Span (Nationals) and Ben Revere (Phillies). Here are the latest numbers:
Denard Span — Washington Nationals:
.269 batting average, .323 on-base percentage.
He’s 108-for-402, with 46 runs scored, two home runs and 30 runs batted in over 101 games.
The Nationals are 52-56, 11.5 games behind Atlanta in the National League East.
Ben Revere — Philadelphia Phillies:
.305 batting average, .338 on-base percentage.
He’s 96-for-315, with 37 runs scored, zero home runs and 17 runs batted in over 88 games.
The Phillies are 50-58, 13.5 games behind Atlanta in the National League East.
Aaron Hicks — Minnesota Twins:
.192 batting average, .259 on-base percentage.
He’s 54-for-281, with 37 runs scored, eight home runs and 27 runs batted in over 81 games.
The Twins are 45-60, 15.5 games behind Detroit in the American League Central.
So what kind of arm-chair conclusions can we draw from all of this? Revere is hurt (broken foot), and hasn’t played in weeks. But he’s not having a terrible season. Neither is Span. Hicks? It’s been rough, despite his flashes of power and speed. One thing we do know for certain: Neither player will be spending much time in the 2013 postseason.
