The Minnesota Twins have been rained out for the second time this week and will play their second doubleheader in three days on Saturday.
The first game will get start around 3:10 p.m. Phil Hughes (15-9), who was scheduled to start on Friday night, will start the first game Saturday against White Sox lefty Jose Quintana.
Logan Darnell will start for Minnesota against rookie Scott Carroll in the second game– which will get underway roughly 20 minutes after the first one ends.
Minnesota lost both games of Thursday’s doubleheader against Cleveland. They fell 8-2 in the first game and 2-0 in the second one.
According to the Pioneer Press, postponing the game could cost Hughes $500,000. The righty is due a bonus if he reaches 210 innings.
Hughes has thrown 187 2/3 innings this season. The newspaper notes that if he averages seven innings over his final three starts, he would be four outs short of 210 innings.
Pushing him back a day in the rotation means he would have to start on short rest if he were to pitch the season finale against Detroit.
While the rain out hurts Hughes, it helps fellow pitcher Tommy Milone. He has been out with a fatigued shoulder and now is also experiencing soreness in his neck.
The Star Tribune reports the extra day will allow the Twins to bring Darnell back and give Milone an extra couple of days off. He will now start on Monday.
