The Minnesota Twins pulled an excellent NCAA tournament prank on starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey, and MLB Fan Cave caught it all on tape.
The backstory is that Pelfrey played college baseball at Wichita State University, home of the previously undefeated Shockers men’s basketball team. We say previously undefeated because they were knocked out of the tournament by Kentucky last weekend. Prior to the loss, the Shockers were steamrolling their competition.
Pelfrey, being the loyal Wichita State alum that he is, apparently had been bragging about his Shockers for quite some time. MLB Fan Cave and the Twins took advantage of Pelfrey’s loyalty by pulling off a brilliant prank.
According to the Star Tribune, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire called Pelfrey into his office and explained that Wichita State’s athletic department wanted famous alumni like Pelfrey to give the team motivational speeches. Gardenhire dialed a number and put Pelfrey on speakerphone, with whom he thought were Wichita State players.
“He starts giving them his life story — ‘I was born and raised in Wichita’ — they don’t want to hear that,” Gardenhire said, according to the report. “He was entertaining. He was really red-faced, and finally he yells, ‘Kick some [butt]!’ ”
That’s when laughter erupted. Pelfrey’s pitching staff buddies, including Glen Perkins and Brian Duensing, had been posing as basketball players on the other end of the phone.
Pelfrey has vowed revenge although he admits the prank “was funny.”
Gardenhire warned Pelfrey not to come after him because he knows “a lot of cops.”
