Aware that the Twins-White Sox season finale might’ve been Joe Mauer’s last game in the big leagues, the Twins had cameras following Mauer all day long Sunday.
Mauer says he still has made up his mind about playing again. Regardless, Minnesota sports history was made as Mauer slapped an opposite-field double in his final at-bat and then brought the baseball world to tears by stepping up the dugout stairs in the catcher’s gear he made his name in from 2003-2013.
Mauer, who said he wanted to surprise his dad by playing catcher again, got emotional in the locker room as he put on the gear that he’d kept in a bag for the last five years, opening it for the first time on Saturday night.
After putting his gear over his uniform, the Twins had cameras rolling when he got emotional again, this time in the locker room in the bottom of the eighth inning.
It’s been reported that Mauer could take weeks to decide his ultimate fate.
If he does come back for a 16th season in 2019, in Minnesota or elsewhere, it’ll be nearly impossible to go out in a way more special than what fans experienced at Target Field.
