The Twins played sloppy defense and faced a tough pitcher, which led to their 6-2 loss against the White Sox Sunday in Chicago. Minnesota lost the series after a 5-2 loss Saturday and 6-0 win Friday.
The Twins bring a disappointing 1-5 record into their home opener Monday against Kansas City.
The Twins had a tough contender with Chris Sale on the mound for the White Sox, who threw 72 strikes out of 98 pitches. Sale allowed just one run on five hits over six innings, striking out eight and walking one.
MLB.com reports Twins starter Phil Hughes almost matched Sale pitch for pitch, throwing 69 strikes out of his 98 pitches. Hughes allowed three runs on eight hits over six innings, but it wasn’t enough for the Twins to get the win.
The White Sox came out strong early, scoring two runs on five straight hits in the first inning.
In the outfield, Eduardo Nunez dropped a fly ball in the second, allowing a three-base error, the Star Tribune reports. Eduardo Escobar dropped another pop fly just two batters later. Despite the errors, the White Sox didn’t score in the inning.
Chicago was ahead 3-2 in the eighth inning when Blaine Boyer pitched out of the bullpen for the Twins, and promptly gave up four straight hits, including a two-run homer by Gordon Beckham, which scored three runs for the White Sox and gave them the victory.
The Twins will play in front of a sold-out crowd in the season home opener against the Royals at 3:10 p.m. Monday.
