Former Gophers head coach Tubby Smith, fired by the U on Monday, told Star Tribune columnist Sid Hartman that he doesn’t plan on retiring just yet.
“I’m going to coach again,” Smith said. “I’m going to take some time and think about what I want to do”
His next stop? It could be Texas Tech, which has already contacted smith, according to ESPN.com. Per the report, Smith could meet with the University about its vacant head coaching position as early as Thursday.
Meanwhile, the search for Smith’s replacement continues. Those who thought that Teague had VCU’s Shaka Smart locked up … were wrong. Last night, Smart announced he isn’t going anywhere.
The latest buzz is around Iowa State head coach, Fred Hoiberg. According to Darren Wolfson, Minnesota has offered the job to Hoiberg.
Who else is a candidate? Well, former Gopher Flip Saunders is certainly at the top of the list. But according to the Pioneer Press, Teague doesn’t sound that interested.
So who’s still in the running? Star Tribune Gophers beat writer Amelia Rayno has a new lineup. Her take: Marquette’s Buzz Williams might be the “best case scenario.”
If Williams is hired, then this tweet we saw today becomes all that more hilarious:

The last word for now? It’s from GamedayGold.com’s Eric Nelson, who maintains that letting go of Tubby in the first place was just the latest in a list of six Gopher goofs.
In his words: “It is a laughable decision. Enjoy your $2.5 million buyout Tubby – and please let everyone from Ft. Knox to Lexington to Paducah and the rest of Kentucky know that Minnesota should not be their next stop…”
