Two coaches at the University of Minnesota had the highest salaries of any other employee at the college last year, the St. Cloud Times reports. Gophers men’s basketball coach Tubby Smith earned a total of $1,891,555 in fiscal year 2012, which ended June 30. Head football coach Jerry Kill’s pay topped $1,256,276.
The newspaper notes University President Eric Kaler earned a total of $588,885 — the third-highest paid.
In October, the Board of Regents unanimously passed Kaler’s $1.18 billion biennial request to the Legislature that would trade increased funding for an undergraduate tuition freeze for two years, the Star Tribune reported. In-state tuition and fees are $13,524, the newspaper says.
Meanwhile, coach Kill says he disagrees with how he was depicted in a New York Times article called “Authority of Coaches Is Absolute No Longer,” which references the incident with former wide receiver A.J. Barker. Kill told the Pioneer Press on Saturday, “I’ve coached a lot of kids through my years. I’ve never had anybody say anything to me about the way I coached. And I don’t consider myself old school at all. Old school is when they take the yardstick and hit you.”
