On this day in 1975, the Twins released Harmon Killebrew. Owner Calvin Griffith wanted the Minnesota icon to pinch-hit and coach, but Killebrew wanted to play another season as a designated hitter.
A few days later, Killebrew signed with the Kansas City Royals, where he would play one more season — in powder blue. Seeing the old baseball card is still a bit of a shock to the system:
In later years, Killebrew would return to the Twins as a broadcaster, coach and mentor. When it came to be Hall of Fame time, he would wear a “TC” — not a “KC” on his cap:
