José Berríos turned in one of his best starts of the season on Thursday night but it wasn’t enough as the Cleveland Indians took the opener of a four-game series with the Minnesota Twins by a score of 4-1.

Berríos was on point despite a rocky start to the game. After the Twins scored a run on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first inning, Berríos allowed an RBI single to Austin Hedges in the top of the second to tie the game at 1-1. But the right-hander took over from there, allowing one run over 6.1 innings while striking out nine batters on the night.
While Berríos was dominant on the mound, the Twins lineup couldn’t provide any support against Cleveland starter J.C. Mejia. After allowing a run in the first, Mejia settled down and cruised through the Twins lineup allowing one run and striking out six batters through six innings.
With both starters dominating the game, it quickly turned into a battle of the bullpens. This scenario has not favored the Twins in 2021 and the trend continued when Jorge Alcala served up a two-run single to Eddie Rosario to give Cleveland a 3-1 lead.

Bobby Bradley added an insurance run with a groundout to help the Indians take the series opener at Target Field. The Twins (31-43) will look to even the series against Cal Quantrill on Friday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:10 p.m.
