Minnesota Twins general manager Terry Ryan explained the decision to promote right-handed starters P.J. Walters and Sam Deduno instead of top pitching prospect Kyle Gibson.
“Every start for him is important, and so far he’s been good, bad, good, bad, good, bad,” Ryan said of Gibson to the Str Tribune. “He’s close, but he’s not quite there yet. We’re looking for him to string together four or five of those good ones. That would give us confidence that it’s time for him to come up here.”
What Ryan failed to mention is that two of Gibson’s last three starts have been better than “good.” They’ve been very good, where he’s thrown complete game shutouts. In the two shutouts, he’s allowed a combined five hits while striking out 16 and walking two.
