Fran Tarkenton loves Adrian Peterson as much as any football fan should. AP, in his opinion, is “maybe the best running back of all time.”
But the former Vikings quarterback says the NFL is a passing league, and the fate of the Purple “rests on the arm of Christian Ponder.”
In his weekly Pioneer Press column, Tarkenton writes that we shouldn’t read too much into the 2013 preseason results because Ponder’s first real test begins in the Sept. 8 season opener against Detroit.
But that being said, Tark agrees with most football experts in that “the only way this team will … go farther is if Ponder develops.”
And: “He doesn’t have the strongest arm in the league, but he can make all the throws you need to succeed.”
Bottom line? “Being an elite quarterback is about making your teammates better and doing whatever it takes to win.”
Sounds like something a Hall of Fame scrambler would say:
