It’s been long known that the Timberwolves made a franchise-altering mistake by passing on Steph Curry twice during the 2009 NBA Draft. Now, we might know why.
Curry, during an appearance on The Bill Simmons Podcast, said former Wolves general manager David Kahn didn’t draft him because of Curry’s love for golf.
“I don’t know if that ever came out – that’s a story,” Curry said. “Everybody knows how much I love golf – play it in my spare time and whatnot … I think the word on the street was that he [Kahn] didn’t draft me because, in Minnesota, it’s cold and I wouldn’t be able to play as much golf, so I would have been miserable.”
Golf? Seriously?
Somebody should’ve told Kahn that golf is a summer sport and basketball a winter sport, meaning Curry would’ve been fine playing basketball all winter and then golfing wherever he wanted in the summer. Minnesota’s cold weather should’ve have zero impact on that draft.
Alas, Kahn took Ricky Rubio fifth overall and then selected draft bust Johnny Flynn sixth. Curry went seventh to the Warriors, and the rest is history.
