Possibly the future goalie of the Minnesota United, 15-year-old Fred Emmings is still a sophomore at Central High School in St. Paul.
Emmings, who turns 16 on Feb. 8, joined his new Major League Soccer teammates at the first day of workouts on Monday, having signed with a contract with the Loons.
And even though he’s still a boy playing alongside men, he fits right in from a physical standpoint as he’s already 6-foot-5 and 210 pounds.
“He’s a big boy, my God. I wish I was that big at his age. I wish I was that big at my age now,” said United coach Adrian Heath, via FOX 9. “We’re excited for him, obviously. It’s a great, momentous day for him yesterday, 15 years of age, being the homegrown guy.”
Previously playing for Highland Park Groveland Recreation Association and the St. Paul Blackhawks, Emmings is currently part of the Minnesota United Academy, on the under-17 team’s roster.
Even though he’s signed with the United there’s no guarantee he ever suits up for an MLS game in Minnesota. As first reported by the Pioneer Press’ Andy Greder, Emmings could eventually play for the Loons or be sold to another team.
According to the Star Tribune, Emmings will play in Europe with Luxembourg’s under-16 national team in March.
The United open the 2020 season Mar. 1 at the Portland Timbers, hosting their home opener two weeks later as they welcome the New York Red Bulls to Allianz Field on Mar. 15.
