The “Spamboni” is for sale.
The original 1972 St. Paul Civic Center Zamboni is in need of some TLC, but the “historic piece of machinery still functions,” the Xcel Energy Center says.

The Xcel Energy Center and Visit St. Paul are hoping to get $2,000 for the 42-year-old HDB Zamboni (Serial No. 1566), which for the last 10 years has been clearing ice at the Wells Fargo Winter Skate outdoor rink at the Landmark Plaza, the Pioneer Press reports.

Travis Larson, the ice-operations manager at Xcel Energy Center told the Pioneer Press the Zamboni is good for someone with a regulation-sized backyard rink, adding “it still makes a good sheet of ice.”
Larson says the city can’t use the Zamboni in its indoor rinks because it wouldn’t pass indoor-air quality requirements.
If the Zamboni sells, the money will be split between Visit St. Paul and the Minnesota Wild Foundation, which plans to use the funds to help the state’s community rinks that need to undergo expensive upgrades to convert their cooling systems from R22 Freon, the Pioneer Press reports.
If it doesn’t sell, the city may contact Hormel, the Minnesota-based company that produces Spam, to see if it wants the machine, the newspaper says.
