We don’t really know. We’re not even sure doctors really know.
The technical name for it is a metatarsophalangeal joint sprain, that when the big toe is involved, is termed “turf toe.”
Is it a hyperextension of the toe? Kind of. Is it a joint injury? Kind of. Is it a ligament injury? Kind of. Is it painful? Absolutely.
Harrison Smith could’ve elected to correct the issue with surgery, instead, as was originally reported, he has decided to wait out the injury, hoping for it to subside without a corrective procedure.
Smith, who has been in a boot and now is in a plaster cast along with a pair of crutches to add to the get up.
Smith told the Pioneer Press; “hopefully with a little rest and keeping it immobilized a little will get me back.”
Smith is out until at least Dec. 1, as he was placed on the IR with a designation to return, meaning he can return to practice in Week 13, while he can return to game action in Week 15.
Andrew Sendejo, who dropped a golden opportunity to stop a New York drive with an interception in the first quarter Monday, took the majority of snaps in Smith’s stead.
