The Minnesota Twins have reportedly completed a deal with former New York Yankee starting pitcher Phil Hughes.
The Star Tribune reports the Twins are expected to announce the signing of the free-agent pitcher to a 3-year $24 million deal this week.
The newspaper reports that Hughes could be in the Twin Cities as early as this weekend for a physical. That is usually the final step before the deal is formally announced.
The Twins have made a major push to bolster their starting rotation signing veteran Ricky Nolasco to a 4-year $49 million deal, last week.
Hughes, 27, was 4-14 last season with the Yankees posting a 5.19 ERA, while giving up 170 hits in under 150 innings last year. Two years ago though he posted a 16-13 mark with a 4.23 ERA.
Hughes had reportedly been seeking more than a two-year deal, according to NBC Sports.
The Twins have long had interest in Hughes, the team first targeted him when it was looking to trade Johan Santana in 2007. Hughes was thought to be the Yankees top prospect at that time.
The Star Tribune also reports the Twins are continuing to make progress in negotiations with former Twins catcher A.J. Pierzynski.
