Drake transfer Joey King will be able to play for the Gophers this season, CBS Sports reports.
King needed clearance from the NCAA to play right away. The University of Minnesota submitted a waiver request for King to be eligible immediately and they were cautiously optimistic that a ruling like today’s would come.

King, a 6-foot-9 power forward who starred at Eastview High School, will help fill the void Trevor Mbakwe and Rodney Williams left after graduating.

King averaged 6.9 points and 2.9 rebounds per game as a freshman at Drake last season. He played fewer than 20 minutes a game, but was still named to the Missouri Valley all-freshman team.
Amelia Rayno of the Star Tribune thinks King will be the starting power forward on opening day.
The Gophers have a scrimmage open to the public Friday night at Williams Arena a 7:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:00 p.m.
