Many basketball fans and reporters have been wondering all offseason if Kevin Garnett of the Minnesota Timberwolves will hang it up after 21 seasons.
Owner Glen Taylor was interviewed by Steve Aschburner of NBA.com on his recent meeting with the Big Ticket.
Taylor told Aschburner that he met with Garnett last month and KG told the Wolves owner, “I’d really like to play next year ‘cuz I’d like to go knowing we got into the playoffs, I just don’t know if I can.”
Talyor went on to say, “Theoretically, he’d like to play. But he has some doubts of his knees holding up.”
Aschburner points out that if Garnett follows in the footsteps of Kobe Bryant and Tim Duncan who both opted for retirement, Garnett would likely join Bryant and Duncan in a loaded Hall of Fame Class in 2021.
Garnett is under contract for this coming season, but appeared in just 38 games last season and averaged career lows across the board. If he indeed plays, it will be his 22nd year which will be a new NBA record.
It’s also important to note that the 40-year-old’s contract of $8 million means very little to the Wolves since Minnesota has yet to hit the league’s $94.1 million salary cap.
The Wolves owner also flirted with the idea that if Garnett wants to give a proper goodbye to Minnesota fans, and perhaps play in just one more game, Taylor said he’d be able to make that happen.
