Already thin at wide receiver, the Vikings have more bad news as Chad Beebe could miss a significant chunk of time after tearing ligaments in his ankle during Sunday’s game against the Raiders.
According to NFL Media’s Tom Pelissero, Beebe’s ligaments showed up torn in an MRI.
Who’s going to take Beebe’s roster spot? You guessed it: Laquon Treadwell. The Vikings confirmed that Treadwell is back while Beebe has been placed on injured reserve.
“No surgery planned for now — they’ll see where he’s at in a week,” Pelissero wrote about Beebe in a tweet.
With Beebe out, the Vikings now have Treadwell and rookie Bisi Johnson to battle for the No. 3 wide receiver job, and it’s unclear who will replace Beebe as the punt returner.
Beebe has been targeted just twice this season, turning those two targets into two catches for 70 yards, including a 61-yard play in Week 2 against the Packers.
Johnson has not been targeted yet in his rookie season.
Treadwell was released after the preseason and had not been picked up by another team.
Reports last week indicated the Vikings brought in a few wide receivers for workouts, including Jordan Matthews, who has been quiet the last three years after bursting onto the scene his first two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles.
Minnesota also announced that cornerback/punt returner Marcus Sherels has re-signed wth the Vikings. It’s likely that he could step in and be the punt returner.
