Former Timberwolves draft pick Brandon Roy was shot in Compton, California, over the weekend, according to TMZ Sports.
USA Today says Roy was shielding children from gunfire outside his grandmother’s house and was hit in the leg.
TMZ adds that Roy is alive and back in Washington recovering from the shooting. Two others were shot as well, although it’s unclear if they were children.
The Timberwolves drafted Roy sixth overall in 2006 and immediately traded him to Portland for Randy Foye. Foye was a bust and Roy went on to win Rookie of the Year and was a three-time All-Star before chronic knee problems ended his career.
He played five games for the Wolves in 2012-13 and then retired.
KING 5 notes that Roy is a boy’s basketball coach at Nathan Hale High School in Seattle.
