One of Minnesota’s most familiar radio voices, Ray Christensen, has died at the age of 92.
The longtime play-by-play voice of the Golden Gophers died Sunday, WCCO announced on Twitter. His son told WCCO Christensen died from an upper respiratory infection, as first reported by the Star Tribune.
There’s only one way to describe Christensen’s voice: Unforgettable.
According to the Pavek Museum of Broadcasting, Christensen called 510 Gopher football games over 50 years and 1,309 Gopher basketball games over 45 years. He also announced for the Twins, Vikings and Minneapolis Lakers, as well as golf tournaments and hockey games.
His final Gopher broadcast was in 2001, at which point the University of Minnesota raised a banner in his honor inside Williams Arena.
