Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger and Russell Wilson are really good examples of franchise quarterbacks. Christian Ponder, at this point, is not. But Ponder believes that can change.
“Yes. I know I can,” Ponder said, according to the Pioneer Press, when asked if he believes he can be a franchise quarterback.
What’s the definition of a franchise quarterback?
“I think it’s a multitude of things,” Ponder said. “I think it’s a long-term quarterback, a big part of the offense, leads teams to wins. I think if you’re not leading teams to wins, you’re not going to be there very long. You got to win a lot of games, and you got to be that guy who’s there for a long time.”
Vikings coach Leslie Frazier gave Ponder a vote of confidence during his press conference on Tuesday.
“Well, Christian knows from me that we want him to succeed,” Frazier said. “He has no reason to look over his shoulder and say if things happen negative, like an interception, you’re going to be pulled — or sack-fumble in the end zone, you’re going to be pulled. He doesn’t have to worry about that. He has to worry about playing well. That’s all he has to worry about.”
