For the record, Scott Diamond is listed as the starting pitcher in Friday’s Twins game against the Mariners in Seattle.
But there’s a chance he could be demoted before then. Diamond is in a horrific slump, going 2-7 with a 6.65 ERA in his last 13 starts.
Who should the Twins call up if Diamond goes down?
Nick Nelson from TwinsDaily.com compiled a list of would-be successors.
First in line appears to be left-hander Andrew Albers, who has a 2.97 ERA in 20 starts in Class AAA Rochester.
There’s also Nick Blackburn, who is earning $5.5 million in this, the last year of his Twins contract. After undergoing elbow surgery in the spring, he made his first start in Rochester last night. It went about as well as you may have expected. His line: 5 innings, 10 hits, 6 earned runs.
Other candidates include Opening Day starter Vance Worley, P.J. Walters and the forgotten Liam Hendriks.
Nelson’s prediction: Blackburn.
