A tale of two World Series games happened for the Minnesota Twins on this day 26 and 22 years ago.
In 1987, facing elimination down three games to two to St. Louis, the Twins put 11 runs on the Cardinals, led by a Kirby Puckett 4-4 performance at the plate and a Kent Hrbek sixth inning grand slam, forcing a Game 7 in the best-of-seven series.
In 1991, Minnesota’s fate would swing the other way, with Atlanta bombing the Twins with 14 runs to take the series lead back as the teams headed back to Minnesota.
The Twins ended up winning the 1991 World Series after taking the final two games at the Metrodome, a series in which the home team won every game.
Game 7 of that series featured one of the epic pitcher’s duals of all time, with John Smoltz taking on Jack Morris. The game is considered one of the best in World Series history, a 1-0, ten inning Minnesota victory.
