Right hander Dillon Gee gave another phenomenal performance for the Twins on Monday.
With Minnesota having to play another doubleheader, Gee made a spot start in the second game and was brilliant on the mound. In six innings, he allowed just one run and two hits, and struck out four while picking up the win.
After the game, manager Paul Molitor told the Pioneer Press that Gee is “definitely a candidate” to start again on Saturday when the Twins are in Toronto.
Although he’s pitched in limited action this season, opponents are having a tough time making contact against Gee.
According to Baseball Prospectus, Gee’s swinging strike rate is 25 percent – which is just off a career high – and opponents are hitting just .194 against him this season.
He’s primarily been a starter throughout his career, but since being called up at the beginning of this month, he’s been “swingman” in the Twins’ bullpen.
In 18 innings, the hurler has allowed just four runs and has struck out 16 batters while owning impeccable control. Among the 70 batters he’s faced, Gee has issued just two free passes.
The Twins signed the veteran pitcher to a minor-league contract in June after he was cut by the Texas Rangers.
He was the 16th different starting pitcher to be used by the Twins this season – that’s tied with the Seattle Mariners for the most in baseball this season.
If Gee can keep it up, he might end up sticking in the rotation for the stretch run, as the Twins are very much alive in the American League Wild Card race.
