In what can only be described as too good to be true for Minnesota sportswriters everywhere, Randy Moss has not only thrown a great quote into the sports stratosphere, he’s also rekindled memories of one of the more absurd sports quotes of the 21st century.
Speaking to his employer, FOX Sports, Moss said this yesterday: ““If I had to go out here and feed my family by getting back on that football field, I could still put up 15 or 16 touchdowns. I can still run. I can still catch. I still got vision. If I still got those things, if I still have the things that God blessed me with, then why can’t I be able to go out there and put up 15 or 16 touchdowns? I can still do it. Age is just a number to me.”
Two portions of Moss’ comments deserve our attention, the first of which is the “feed my family” comment.
Should Minnesota sports aficionados recall, a certain Wolves off-guard of the mid-2000’s used the “feed my family” line, though in a much more asinine context.
That man was one Latrell Sprewell, who made $14.6 million while helping the Wolves to the Western Conference Finals in 2003-04, then turned down a three-year deal worth anywhere from $21-30 million before using the inedible line.
After calling the offer “insulting”, he would go on to say “‘why would I want to help them win a title? They’re not doing anything for me. I’m at risk. I have a lot of risk here. I got my family to feed.”
We’re not sure what you feed your family, but unless it’s solid gold, it should be relatively simple to feed them off $7 million a year, but what do we know.
At least when Moss used the increasingly famous Minnesota sports line, it echoed Sprewell in wording only, not context.
The other noteworthy part of Randy’s verbal etchings is the “15 or 16” touchdown remark.
The only note we have on this is that no player in the league aside from Saints tight end Jimmy Graham, who has 15 receiving touchdowns, has more than 12 scores through the air.
Randy has never lacked confidence, so we shouldn’t be totally surprised that at age 36, he still believes in his abilities.
