Justin Morneau finished with three hits, including two home runs and three RBI in the Twins’ 6-5 win over the Yankees. Jason Marquis earned the win in his Twins debut. He struggled in the first inning before settling in for five solid innings. Josh Willingham extended his hitting streak to 12 games.
The Twins jumped on top of the Yankees with four runs in the first inning. Jamey Carroll and Joe Mauer hit back-to-back RBI doubles and Morneau blasted a long two-run home run to right-center field.
New York battled back with three runs in the bottom of the first. Marquis threw 34 pitches in his first inning as a Twin, but he got out of the inning and settled down to pitch five innings.
The bullpen then took over the game. Brian Duensing and Jared Burton held the lead for the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. Matt Capps made things interesting in the ninth by allowing a home run to Derek Jeter, but he did earn his second save of the season.
Game four of the series is Thursday night. Anthony Swarzak will start for the Twins.
