Welcome to our weekly college hockey roundup looking back at the world of Division I hockey around the state.
This will be where you can find Saint Cloud State, UMD, Minnesota State-Mankato, and Bemidji State men’s hockey results and analysis each week throughout the college hockey season.
Its a state full of schools loaded with puck talent, here’s what they managed last weekend.
NCHC Minnesota-Duluth: UMD, who fell out of the USCHO.com Top 20 poll last week, had a huge series with No. 2 Notre Dame to contend with at Amsoil Arena.
It ended positively for UMD, a big 4-1 win over the Fighting Irish Saturday after losing 3-2 Friday.
The loss for Notre Dame was their first of the year, and with the UMD victory, you’d expect them back in the Top 20 when rankings are released this week.
Eight Bulldogs found the points column Saturday, while six did Friday.
WCHA BEMIDJI STATE: The Beavers, who were soundly beaten twice by the U of M last weekend, opened their WCHA schedule with a sweep of Alabama-Huntsville.
The Chargers enter their first WCHA season just two years removed from the program nearly being eliminated, and their record as in independent the last three years combined was 9-75-4.
Friday night was a blowout, 6-1 in favor of BSU, with Markus Gerbrandt netting a hat trick.
Saturday, Alabama-Huntsville nearly pulled what would’ve been a rather sizable upset, but fell short in a 1-0 defeat, the lone goal supplied by Cory Ward in the first, who also scored Friday.
NCHC St. Cloud State: The Huskies are still undefeated on the season after a road sweep sweep of Colgate in Hamilton, New York this weekend.
No. 8 SCSU scored twice in the third period Friday after Colgate had tied it with just five minutes to go, an eventual 4-2 victory for the Huskies.
Saturday brought more late drama as Colgate charged back from down 4-0 with three consecutive goals, but could not get the equalizer as SCSU goalie Ryan Faragher stiffened late in a 4-3 win.
Minnesota State was off this weekend, they open their WCHA season Friday with the aforementioned Beavers of Bemidji State.
Don’t worry, we’re not leaving out the Gophers. You can find game recaps of the land’s No. 1 team shortly after every game.
