Its a state full of schools loaded with puck talent, here’s what they managed last weekend.
NCHC SAINT CLOUD STATE: Up to No. 2 in the USCHO.com national poll, SCSU was given a chance to close some ground on top-ranked University of Minnesota with a sweep over Colorado College.
The Huskies did their job Saturday night, winning 6-2, but Friday at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud, CC grabbed a point.
Scott Wamsganz leveled the contest at 2 for the Tigers with 8:42 left in the game, and neither side could muster the game-winner.
With the tie, SCSU couldn’t keep pace with Nebraska-Omaha in the NCHC, sitting at second in the standings.
WCHA MINNESOTA STATE: The Mavericks split with Bowling Green just two weekends ago before being swept by the Gophers last weekend, and a split with the Falcons was once again in store against their WCHA foe.
Following a 4-3 defeat in overtime Friday, Minnesota State got an overtime win of their own, Bryce Gervais supplying the game-winner in the extra session.
The Mavericks were down 2-0 but got a pair of power play goals to get to overtime, and Minnesota State will have to be content with a season split with Bowling Green.
That isn’t necessarily a terrible result considering the Falcons are above MSU in the receiving votes category of the national poll. The Mavericks remain in the middle of the pack in the WCHA.
WCHA BEMIDJI STATE: BSU was looking to improve their spot in the WCHA standings against No. 16 Lake Superior State this past weekend.
A 3-2 loss Friday opened the series, but Saturday was a different story, with the Beavers pulling out an overtime victory thanks to the ever-present Cory Ward lighting the lamp a minute into OT.
Bemidji State becomes the second WCHA team to get to double-figures in points, they now have 11, with No. 10 Ferris State leading the conference with 15.
Here are our game stories for game one and game two of the Gophers-UMD series, as the two renewed their rivalry Friday and Sunday, a split being the outcome.
