For the second year in a row, the Minnesota Lynx will be without star forward Maya Moore.
Moore told the New York Times that her focus continues to be on trying to free a 39-year-old inmate from what she believes was a wrongful conviction in her hometown of Jefferson City, Missouri.
Moore, who helped lead the Lynx to four WNBA championships between 2011-17, told the New York Times that “basketball has not been foremost in my mind,” and that her life is “in a really good place right now.”
The 30-year-old former WNBA MVP is attempting to help free Jonathan Irons, a 39-year-old who has been in prison since the age of 16 after being sentenced to 50 years after being convicted of burglary and assaulting a homeowner with a gun.
Moore and Irons’ attorney, per the New York Times, argue that the evidence supporting Irons’ innocence is overwhelming.
Moore wrote a letter to Missouri Attorney General Eric Schmitt in October arguing that there is no DNA evidence or physical evidence of any kind that links Irons to the crime.
