Maryland’s Ty Johnson capped a huge day with a game-winning 35-yard touchdown run to give the Terrapins a 31-24 win over the Gophers on Saturday at TCF Bank Stadium.
Maryland, down to its third-string quarterback after the top two on the depth chart were lost earlier this season to injury, used a dominating ground game and a suffocating rushing defense to outlast Minnesota in the conference opener or both teams.
Trailing 24-17 with just over four minutes left in the fourth quarter, Rhoda connected with wide receiver Eric Carter on a 35-yard strike that put the Gophers on the one-yard line, and Shannon Brooks punched it in on the next play for the game-tying score.

Maryland used Johnson’s 34-yard touchdown run to take the lead on the next possession. Johnson finished the day with 18 carries for 130 yards. The Terps ran for 274 yards in total, an average 6.2 yards per carry.
The Gophers had one final chance but Rhoda was intercepted deep in Gophers territory with 41 seconds to play.
