The first guest on GoMN’s new One Hunnit Podcast, Twins outfielder Byron Buxton, loosened up between a doubleheader with the Rockies last week and told two really fun stories.
First, believe it or not, he’s not as fast as his brother.
“Yeah, my brother is faster than me,” Buxton said of his brother, who’s in the Navy. “I guess, just genetics. He kind of got the upside because he ran track in high school. His form is much better, his first step is much better … anything to do with running he’s going to be better than me.”
“Last time we raced was like a year and a half ago and he beat me by a car length,” Buxton added. “He floats. I thought I float, but… it’s ridiculous.”
We asked Buxton to tell us a crazy story that most people haven’t heard. His answer is cold as ice – literally. Listen to the story about his minor league teammates putting his jersey and pants in the freezer.
“I come in, like a Saturday night game, and nothing is in my locker,” Buxton explains. “My shoes are gone, I’m like, ‘where’s my stuff?’ Everybody’s laughing. I’m getting mad because I can’t find my stuff. It’s like 30 minutes before stretch and like, ‘alright, somebody’s gotta come out with my stuff.’ You’ll never believe where it was.”
“They folded everything up – just as neat as possible – and put it in the freezer. I was on the concrete trying to bang out the ice to get to stretch. And you know I missed stretch. You know I missed it. That’s the fun stuff that goes on that nobody knows about.”
