The Gophers women’s basketball team put the rest of the country on notice Thursday night with an upset win over 12th-ranked Syracuse.
Minnesota, ranked 20th in the latest Associated Press Top 25 poll, won 72-68 at Williams Arena in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge in what should be enough to start getting respect from voters in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches poll, of which Minnesota is not in the top 25.
The Gophers led most of the game before a 13-0 run in the fourth quarter gave Syracuse a 61-55 lead with 3:36 to play. Minnesota responded with a 12-0 run of their own with eight of the points coming from senior guard Kenisha Bell.
Bell led all scorers with 24 points while Taiye Bello had a huge double-double with 20 points and 18 rebounds.
The victory is Minnesota’s first in a top-25 matchup since Jan. 15, 2006.
The 6-0 Gophers are back in action Sunday at 3 p.m. when they host Air Force.
