Today’s pitching line for Kyle Gibson in the Rochester-Lehigh Valley Triple-A game was a bit beastly. In six innings, he gave up six runs on eight hits … but he did strike out six batters.
It’s not exactly what he had in mind when trying to make the jump to the Twins pitching staff after being passed over last week for Samuel Deduno (last night’s winner) and P.J. Walters (tonight’s starter).
This week, Twins GM Terry Ryan hinted if Gibson could put together a third-consecutive solid start, he might be in prime position for a call-up.
But today’s rough outing may be the excuse the front office needs to keep Gibson on the farm, which is demanding consistency before summoning their top pitching prospect to the big leagues.
Before today’s game, Gibson had won three of his previous four starts … including two complete-game shutouts.
