Good thing the Gophers have plenty of depth at the running back position. The latest reports from Dinkytown have Minnesota’s top running back, Donnell Kirkwood, doubtful for Saturday’s non-conference game against Western Illinois.
If he doesn’t play it will be second straight game missed because of a sprained ankle he suffered in the season opener against UNLV.
“Unless there’s a miracle that takes place, he’s not 100 percent,” Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill said. “You don’t play a back when he’s not 100 percent. But I’m encouraged by his attitude and the work he’s put in this week.”
Kill says the goal is to have Kirkwood ready for the Big Ten season.
Roderick Williams picked up the slack with a career-high 148 yards last week in a 44-21 win at New Mexico State.
Quarterback Philip Nelson leads the team with 205 rushing yards.
