A blister has knocked Twins starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi out of Tuesday’s All-Star Game, but Major League Baseball has announced that his roster spot will be filled by Jose Berrios.
Odorizzi is having a fantastic season despite hitting some bumps in the road of late. Berrios might be having a better season because of his consistency, and now he’ll get the chance to share the stage at the Midsummer’s Classic with many of the pitchers he’s considered as good or better than.
- Odorizzi: 10-4, 3.15 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, .214 BAA, 96 strikeouts in 88.2 innings
- Berrios: 8-4, 2.89 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, .235 BAA, 102 strikeouts in 112 innings
The main difference is that Berrios has pitched deeper into games than Odorizzi, thus saving on a Twins bullpen that is overworked and average in talent.
Odorizzi has pitched beyond six innings just twice in 17 starts, and has yet to go more than seven innings. Berrios, meanwhile, has gone six-plus innings in 11 of 17 starts, and has 14 quality starts.
Berrios is scheduled to pitch Thursday in an afternoon game against the Athletics. Odorizzi is expected to return from the 10-day injured list after the All-Star break, so he’ll probably miss just one start (Sunday).
