Jaden McDaniels will not play in the Timberwolves opener Wednesday against the Raptors as he continues to recover from a strained calf.
Minnesota made his status official on Tuesday, saying McDaniels is day-to-day and further updates will be announced when available. The 23-year-old suffered the calf strain when the Timberwolves were playing and practicing in Abu Dhabi earlier this month.

On Monday, shortly after he signed a five-year contract extension, McDaniels hinted that he would see Timberwolves fans for the home opener Saturday against the Heat. But it’s unclear if he was hinting at being ready to play or just seeing fans at Target Center for the first time this season.
“What’s up, Timberwolves fans? I’m excited to stay here with y’all and continue to try and win the championship and I’ll see you all this weekend versus Miami,” he said.

Who replaces McDaniels in the starting lineup hasn’t been announced, but it’s a good bet that it will be Kyle Anderson or Nickeil Alexander-Walker.
The Timberwolves and Raptors tip off the 2023-24 season at 6:30 p.m. CT Wednesday.
