The Minnesota Gophers shocked the 100,000 fans in the ‘Big House’ in Ann Arbor, Michigan with a 30-14 upset win over the Wolverines Saturday afternoon — and took ownership of the Little Brown Jug for the first time since 2005.
Michigan was a 13-point favorite against Minnesota, which had lost six straight and 22 of the past 23 meetings in the series. But the Gophers clearly came ready to end that losing streak.
Quarterback Mitch Leidner started the game after missing last weekend with a turf toe injury. He completed 14 of 22 passes for 167 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions. He also ran for another touchdown score. Gophers running back David Cobb carried 32 times for 183 yards against a Michigan team that came in leading the Big Ten in total defense.
Yes, Michigan is awful. But Gophers came in here with solid game plan, tough defense and took it to Wolverines.

Michigan quarterback Shane Morris turned the ball over twice in the third quarter, and Minnesota scored on both opportunities to break away with a 27-7 lead.
Minnesota was leading 13-7 when Gophers defender Theiren Cockran deflected a pass from Morris and linebacker De’Vondre Campbell caught it and ran 30 yards for a touchdown.
On the next possession, Morris fumbled and Cockran recovered the ball on Michigan’s 30-yard line. After moving the chains to the one-yard line, the Gophers scored again when Leidner threw a short pass to Maxx Williams.
The loss dropped the Wolverines to 2-3, as frustrated Michigan fans booed head coach Brady Hoke.

The blockbuster win was just what Gophers head coach Jerry Kill was looking for to build on the success of last year’s eight-win season, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.
