Hopkins High School basketball standout Kerwin Walton is headed to the University of North Carolina.
Walton, rated a 4-star recruit by 247Sports, announced his commitment to the Tar Heels Monday morning, choosing them over the Gophers, Arizona, Creighton, Georgetown and Vanderbilt.
Walton was expected to make his announcement Saturday but the Star Tribune’s Marcus Fuller reported that he and his family delayed the decision because Walton was struggling to decide between Minnesota and North Carolina.

Walton is rated by 247Sports as the No. 999 player nationally in the 2020 recruiting class, and the fifth-best player in Minnesota’s 2020 graduating class. He was averaging 26.3 points per game for Hopkins up until the season was canceled because of the novel coronavirus pandemic.
Walton was teammates with Zeke Nnaji during Hopkins’ 2019-20 championship season. Nnaji, the Pac 12 Newcomer of the Year at Arizona, announced recently that he’s entering the NBA Draft.
