Rumors have been flying around a reunion of the Minnesota Twins and Matt Garza for seemingly the entire offseason.
Late Thursday, that speculation looks as if it will finally be put to rest, as reports say Garza will be signing with the Milwaukee Brewers.
Later Thursday, it looks like the deal may not be done yet, as the Brewers released a statement indicating talks are “ongoing”, but that Garza has not signed on the dotted line.
As recently as Jan. 2, Minnesota had been linked to Garza, with reports saying the Twins were still “kicking the tires” of Garza after initial interest at the offseason’s outset.
The likelihood of Minnesota landing Garza should never be considered high knowing they’ve already dropped $73 million on Phil Hughes and Ricky Nolasco this offseason, and they don’t don pinstripes, meaning they can’t spend $465 million in an offseason.
Our gut feeling on Garza’s landing spot would still be Milwaukee despite the late reports the deal isn’t done, because if a team is putting a statement out regarding a deal not being done with a player, we feel the attention paid to the issue signifies a positive development may be coming.
It would only be positive for Milwaukee and Garza though, so a negative for Twins fans. It’s OK, the last time Garza posted a winning record in the American League was in 2010, so maybe things wouldn’t work out with Minnesota anyway.
