Minnesota. Sports. You know the drill.
All too often Minnesota’s sports teams are on the receiving end of so-called “famous victories,” yet with 15 minutes to play it looked liked the Loons were the ones writing their names in the history books.
The Loons found themselves in the Western Conference finals for the first time in their history thanks to comfortable wins over the Colorado Rapids and Sporting KC, and the MLS Cup Final beckoned with goals from Reynoso and Bakaye Dibassy, which had given United a 2-0 advantage in the 67th minute over the Seattle Sounders.
But a 75th minute goal from Will Bruin set the stage for a tense, and ultimately heartbreaking finale as the Loons looked increasingly tired in the face of a Sounders onslaught.
The Sounders laid siege to United’s goal, and the Loons held onto their slender 2-1 advantage with a mixture of luck and some last-ditch tackles until the 89th minute.
It was then that Raul Ruidiaz fired home after being left unmarked at the far post from a corner thanks to some inattentive defending, seemingly sending the game into overtime.
But worse was to come, with the Sounders continuing to press for a winner, which came courtesy of Gustav Svensson’s 93rd minute header.
