Ricky Rubio, J.J. Barea and Gorgui Dieng are the only Minnesota Timberwolves participating for their home countries at the 2014 FIBA World Cup. Rubio is running the point guard position for host nation Spain, Barea is doing the same for Puerto Rico and Dieng is protecting the rim for Senegal.
Of the three, Dieng has stood out.
Senegal is far from a basketball power. The African nation lost to Greece on Saturday but has since picked up wins over Puerto Rico and Croatia. Leading the way for Senegal is Dieng, who has tallied a whopping 66 points and 35 rebounds through three games.
Kevin Love, now of the Cleveland Cavaliers, gave a shout out to his former teammate.

Dieng’s awesome performances attracted some more love from Rubio, who has helped guide Spain into the Round of 16.

Dieng’s 27 points and eight rebounds Monday helped Senegal beat Croatia. SB Nation says it was the upset of the tournament so far. Senegal was considered by some as the worst team in the tournament, but now they are one victory from advancing to the single-elimination portion of the tournament. Not bad for a country that hadn’t won on the world stage since 1998.
